What impact could age have on judgment? Is 25 the new age for adulthood for men? (18 or 21 for women)

What can we learn from research about the brain?

Here are some articles to consider...

  • Brain Maturity Extends Well Beyond Teen Years : NPR

    www.npr.org › News › Science › Brain Candy

    NPR
Oct 10, 2011 - But emerging science about brain development suggests that most people don't reach full maturity until the age 25. ... two years earlier than male brains, so you're more likely to have a late developing male brain than female.
  • Delayed Development: 20-Somethings Blame the Brain - WSJ.com

    online.wsj.com/.../SB1000087239639044371370...

    The Wall Street Journal
Aug 23, 2012 - Recent research into how the brain develops suggests that people ...age of first marriage for women in the U.S. was 20, and men 22. ... 20s not to know what you're going to do and change your mind and seem very unstable in your life. ... from 18 to 25, trends that tend to level out by age 28, studies show.
  • BBC News - Is 25 the new cut-off point for adulthood?

Sep 23, 2013 - We used to think that the brain was fully developed by very early ... thinking strategies are used as your brain becomes more like an adult brain. ... at a certain age, that actually there's evidence of brain development ... led to a growing number of young men and women in their late 20s still living at home.

  • Some questions that I'm wrestling with:

  • Does a student who is 20 years old ready for some of the difficult assignments that I give to students?
  • Should the degree be conditional on the student retaking some issues and resubmitting some papers?
  • If academic papers are submitted by people of different ages, could a professor suspend grading for people under the age of majority?   For women, the age might be 18-21 while for  men the age might be 24-25.
  • Could a university suspend a degree from someone who clearly acts as though he or she has not been educated?   The degree coudl be reinstated when the speaker explains to the satisfacitono the departmetn that he recants a previous statement about science.
  • people under the age of 25 are more likely to get into accidents. This isn't an opinion -- insurance companies make these assessments based on the facts before them. For example, young men are more likely to get into accidents than women, and married folks are less likely to be in accidents than their single peers [source: State Farm]. So, a married woman at 25 is already likely to have a lower insurance rate than an unmarried male counterpart,
  • Besides the age issue, what about the gender difference?

  • InsWeb's 2010 Male/Female Car Insurance Rate Index

    male/female car insurance rate index
The national median car insurance rate for women is about 9% lower than the rate for men.
According to information collected by InsWeb, the median car insurance rate for women is about 9% lower than the rate for men.
The national median rate for women is $698 for a six-month policy. For men, it's $765.
Why do women pay less on average for car insurance than men? The answer may lie in the differences between the men and women that shop online for insurance, rather than the way insurers actually view the genders.
Based on an examination of male and female drivers who request insurance quotes at InsWeb.com, several differences are noteworthy, including:
    • Women are almost 50 percent less likely than men to have a DUI/DWI on their driving record
    • Women are approximately 10 percent less likely to have a moving violation on their record
    • Women own vehicles with an average list price that is over 8 percent lower than the vehicles owned by men ($22,815 vs. $24,861, respectively)
    • Women listed as the primary driver are less likely than men to purchase a car insurance policy with multiple drivers and/or multiple vehicles

  • Welcome to the blog for "Global Skills Department at TIU"

Some of the issues covered in the GLobal Skill Department

What are the skills needed in the global economy?  What does Tony Wagner of Harvard mean by "Initiative and Entrepreneuring"?

What do you want to learn next?

If you hold a degree from a university, you hold a sheet of paper that declares, "This person has shown the ability to learn new things."

If you are planning to get a degree at a university, you are still charged with this challenge:  What do you plan to learn next?
